Abstract:
This plenary session will showcase leading technologies and their applications in interpretation and museum education as cited in the NMC Horizon Report: 2011 Museum Edition from the New Media Consortium.
Session Description:
Join us for the official release of the second annual NMC Horizon Report: Museum Edition. Last year's edition, the 2010 Report has been downloaded more than 10,000 times by museums aorund the globe who use the report as a strategic technology planning resource. Written for an audience that includes museum administrators, trustees, and non-technical staff, the report profiles six technologies that are predicted to see mainstream use within the next five years.
This plenary session will include a brief overview of the findings and process involved in the creation of this year's publication, which involved over forty experts from ten countries, who used a specially designed wiki for their work. The NMC's Horizon Project, of which this report is a part, is built from the ground up as an open content initiative, and both the report and all the associated research materials are released under a liberal Creative Commons license. All of the background research, discussions, and more can be found at http://museum.wiki.nmc.org/.
A highlight of the session will be a special "lightening round" of presentations from a number of MCN members showcasing how they are using or planning to use the profiled technologies in their institutions.
