Mary W. Elings is the Archivist for Digital Collections at The Bancroft Library at the University of California at Berkeley. Ms. Elings holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Art History and has been active in the museum, library and archives field for over 15 years. Her work has primarily focused on art documentation, cataloging and standards; digitization of museum, library and archival primary source materials; and art conservation. At the Bancroft Library, Ms. Elings oversees all aspects of the digital collections, including digitization of images and text, creation of electronic text and digital audio, online finding aid development, metadata standards development and policies, database development and management, grant project management, and online access. Ms. Elings is also very active in cultural heritage metadata standards development. She is Chair of the Online Archive of Californiaâs Digital Object Standards subcommittee, Member of the Advisory Board for Cataloging Cultural Objects (a joint publication of the Getty/Visual Resources Association), co-Chair of the Museum Computer Networkâs Standards and Controlled Vocabulary SIG, and serves as a reviewer for developing XML schemas for descriptive standards in the cultural heritage field.
